The summer heat and humidity is finally here! Going to the beach, attending town festivals and family reunions with barbecues fill the sunny summer days. Are your feet begin protected during these fun summer activities? Summer can damage your feet if you aren’t keeping your feet healthy and happy.
Correct footwear
A popular shoe choice for people in the summer is flip flops. They are an inexpensive and stylish shoe choice, yet they don’t offer much arch support and very little cushion. If worn for a long period of time, it can lead to sore arches and heels. Over a long period of time this can progress into chronic health conditions such as arthritis, stress fracture or plantar fasciitis.
Barefoot walking
There is no better feeling than sand and grass in between your toes during summer nights. Be careful though, being barefoot in the summer exposes feet to sunburn, plantar warts, athlete’s foot, ringworm and other infections. Be aware of your surroundings when you don’t have the proper shoe protection on.
Swollen and sweaty
Warm temperatures increases the likelihood of swollen and sweaty feet for some people. Stay hydrated throughout the day by drinking plenty of water to minimize swelling in your feet. When experiencing extremely hot feet, make sure you’re wearing the proper kind of socks and change shoes to ensure your feet don’t stay wet for a long period of time.
Summer can be tough on your feet, but remember these tips to keep your feet happy in the sun:
- Wear flip-flops sparingly
- Ensure your feet are completely dry before putting on socks and shoes
- Wear protective shoes in public showers, saunas and pools
- Choose a sturdy well-cushioned shoe with firm arch support when you’ll be standing for a long period of time
